It’s Tejón Time

We are very proud to introduce the Tejón. It features a high output
transmit oscillator to push the signal deeper and an increased gain
for sensitivity to smaller items. The Tejón was designed from the
ground up with the coin and relic hunter in mind. It also features a
new color scheme from Tesoro- blue, gray and black. The Tejón was
over a year and a half in the design stages and represents a new
generation of Tesoro detectors.

Once you get past the new color scheme, the first thing that you will
notice is the lack of a mode switch on the faceplate. We have moved
it beneath the control housing so that you are able to switch modes
quickly. Pinpointing and checking your targets with the Alternate
Discrimination is a breeze.

The Tejón’s two discriminate modes are fully user definable. The
engineers at Tesoro have given the user the ability to set the
machine for their hunting needs. Each discriminate mode uses
ED180 circuitry. The regular discriminate also incorporates a full-
time all metal setting. Want to hunt in all metal and check the
targets for iron or discriminate out iron and perform a check for
high value silver or gold targets? It’s no problem for the Tejón.
Simply set the Discriminate and Alternate Discriminate modes for
your style of hunting and swing the coil. Then use the Trigger
Switch to quickly change modes to check your targets. Push the
trigger forward to activate the Alternate Discriminate or pull the
trigger back to pinpoint the target. The Tejón makes it fast and easy.

But the user definable features do not stop there. The Tejón has a
manually adjustable ground balance that works for both the All
Metal mode and both Discriminate modes. Using a three and three
quarter potentiometer, the Tejón will meet and defeat all soil
conditions and is suitable for any hunting style.

The Tejón also has an audio tone adjust. If you have trouble hearing
certain tones or have certain tones that you are more comfortable
with, the Tejón can meet you desires. Using the tone adjustment
control, you can switch from a normal tone with VCO pinpoint/all
metal to any one of thousands of different audio tones for the All
Metal and Discriminate modes. Fine tune the tone until it is right
for you and see how much easier it is to find, pinpoint and dig the
targets that you are looking for.

While the Tesoro Tejón was designed mostly for coin and relic
hunters, its user definable controls are simple and easy to use
making it able to handle just about any type of treasure hunting
that you may wish to try.

During the design phase of the Vaquero (pronounced va-care-oh),
we knew that it was going to be a very hard working detector. It is
designed as an all-around detector, able to do just about everything
that any detectorist could want to do. Vaquero is the Spanish word
for cowboy. When we think of hard work and the ability to take on
any kind of tough job, we think of the cowboys of the old west.

The main part of the Vaquero’s versatility is its three and three-
quarters manually adjusted ground balance. This will give the
detectorist the power to set up his machine to best suit the
mineralization conditions that he is working in and his personal
treasure hunting style. The Vaquero adds an ED180 discrimination
feature to filter the trash from the treasure and a Push Button
Pinpoint that makes digging up the goodies that much easier. The
discriminate knob is also used to switch into a threshold-based All
Metal Mode.

The Cibola (pronounced see-bow-lah) combines H.O.T. circuitry
with  turn-on-and-go simplicity. It is designed for the treasure
hunter that does not want to bother with too many controls. The
Cibola is named after one of the fabled seven cities of gold that the
conquistadors were searching after and will simplify the search for
any treasures to be found.

The Cibola’s main search mode is an ED 180 Silent Search
discriminate. A threshold-based All Metal is accessed by the Push
Button Pinpoint mode. The ease of use for the Cibola makes it the
perfect detector for both the metal detecting novice as well as the
treasure hunter that has been around for a while.

The Cortés represents the best combination of current and new
technologies that Tesoro has to offer. When Jack Gifford and Vince
Gifford set out to create a new target ID machine they each brought
with them different experience. Jack has over twenty-five years
experience designing some of the best analog detectors that have
been on the market. Vince brought with him a decade of computer
systems experience. Together, they have been creating new
technology that gives our detectors superior performance and keeps
them easy to use. Various parts of this technology have been finding
it's way into Tesoro detectors since the introduction of the Golden
µMax. The new Cortés represents all phases of our new
microprocessor technology combined with our tried and true analog
circuits to create a detector that has all of the high end features our
customers have asked for with user friendly Tesoro controls.

The first thing that you will notice is the control box and battery
holder configuration. The µMax housing was just not big enough to
hold the new circuit board so we moved the batteries down under
the arm bracket and increased the size of the box slightly. This
allows us to use a 12 volt system to work with the demands of the
target ID circuitry. It also gave us the ability to put a 2¼" speaker on
the Cortés. This will give better and louder target signals in the field.

The Cortés' 2x16 character LCD display will catch your eye as well.
This area is the information center of the detector. The top row is an
alpha/numeric display that gives a broad indication of your possible
target. One of five different categories are displayed. Also if the
target is overdriving the circuits, the display will tell you to lift the
coil for a more accurate reading. The alpha/numeric and bar graph
section of the display will remain blank until the coil passes over a
target. After the detectorist has decided to dig or ignore the target
the display will clear itself after six seconds of not receiving a signal.
The display works in all modes, regardless of the discrimination
setting. By clearing the display after six seconds the user is able to
tell if has passed over a new target that may have been
discriminated out. The detector may not produce an audio signal,
but the display will show a target reading. The detectorist then has
the choice to either go back and check the target or ignore it.

The bottom half of the display contains the real nuts and bolts
information that will help you to work the Cortés to its fullest
extent. The far right hand part of the display is a battery level
indicator. This gives an accurate measure of your current battery
level. On the far left-hand side is the probable depth indicator. The
Cortés uses the phase shift of the target to determine the probable
target and then looks at the amplitude of the signal to determine the
depth. For example: a nickel and a quarter are in the ground and
the quarter is deeper than the nickel; if we just went off of
amplitude change, the detector may read the two targets as being
the same depth. However, the Cortés would show the quarter as
being deeper because its phase shift response is different than that
of the nickel.

In the center of the lower display is a nine segment bar graph
display. The different segments represent the following possible
targets: iron; foil: nickel; round tab; square tab; zinc penny; copper
penny and dime; quarter; half and dollar. The graph shows what
the coil saw during the entire sweep of the coil. The targets metal
composition and orientation in the ground can cause "smearing" or
possible indication in more than one graph segment. For example:
pull tabs usually will not respond in a single segment but give
signals in two or three segments. To help the detectorist decide on
the target, we have also included an ID Number display next to the
bar graph.

The ID Number takes the largest part of the signal and converts it to
a two digit number. When Vince put together the scale for the ID
Number, he decided to put the most resolution in the middle range
of targets. This is the area where nickels, pull tabs and gold rings lie.
We know that iron will always be on the low end of the scale and
silver coins and jewelry will always be on the high end. So iron
targets will always give a reading of 0 and silver will always give a
reading of 95. The Cortés now gives you the ability to decide what
you want to dig. One of the hardest parts of designing detectors is
the fact that pull tabs can vary from place to place. But a hunter
working in the same area can use the ID Number to learn the
characteristics of the local pull tabs and effectively ignore them.

For those detectorists that prefer a notch filter discrimination, we
have also added a simple flip switch to activate either a narrow or
wide notch window. When the display is blanked, two "N"s or three
"W"s will appear on the screen. The N will indicate a narrow notch
window and will be in the round tab and square tab portion of the
graph segments. The wide notch window will cause a W to be in the
round tab, square tab and zinc penny segments. These indications
are an easy way to check what part of the scale is being notched out.
The notch indicators will only show when there is no target under
the coil. When there is a target signal, no matter if the target has
been discriminated or not, the display will show the information of
the target.

The Sum mode is another feature to help identify targets. While the
detector is in either the Discriminate or All Metal mode, the display
shows the target information from the entire sweep of the coil. Each
time the coil passes over the target the microprocessor generates a
new target ID reading. While this is nice for general searching, it
can be confusing while pinpointing. This is where the Sum mode
becomes useful. Pushing the springloaded switch into the Sum
mode causes the detector to start a multi-tone ID and averages all of
the coil passes over the target. The tone ID has nine different tones
and relates directly to the bar graph segments. The higher up on the
graph the target is, the higher the pitch of the audio signal.
Averaging the coil passes over the target gives the detectorist the
ability to get rid of most of the signal noise that prevents making an
accurate target identification. Here's how it works: when the
detectorist gets a target signal that he wishes to check out, he
pushes and holds the Mode switch in the Sum position. Shortening
his coil sweep to only a two or four inch sweep he passes the coil
over the target three to seven times. The short multiple sweeps give
the microprocessor the chance to sum the passes and average them.
During the sweeps the audio ID will start at the lowest signal and
will get progressively higher in pitch until there is no more change.
When this happens the detector is giving the most accurate ID
possible. Then the user can decide if he wants to dig or ignore the
target.

All of these new features are complimented by Tesoro's easy to use
controls. No touch pads or scroll through menus. Set the detector
how you like it by adjusting the knobs on the front of the machine.
The Cortés features an On/Off Sensitivity knob; a Discriminate Level
knob; a Manual Ground Balance knob; a Mode Switch with All
Metal, Discriminate and Sum mode settings; a Notch Width switch
with Off, Narrow and Wide settings and a Light switch to control
the LCD backlight with a High, Low, and Off positions.

The Cortés fits into a package that weighs just less than three
pounds (including the batteries!) and is covered under Tesoro's
Lifetime Warranty. The Tesoro Cortés makes target ID easy and fun.

The DeLeón is a Target Identification Detector or T.I.D. The DeLeón
is designed as an easy to use, turn-on-and-go detector. The faceplate
has only four controls: Sensitivity, Discriminate, Threshold and a
Mode Switch. It uses the same circuitry as the Cortés, so you can
expect the same depth and sensitivity from the DeLeón that the
Cortés is well known for.

The DeLeón's display screen is one character high by eight
characters wide. It is larger and easier to read than the Cortés
display but does not carry as much information. Starting from left
to right on the faceplate, you will see that the DeLeón has a Coin
Depth reading, a five segment bar graph and a two-digit Target ID
Number. The bar graph shows several categories for ID purposes,
but we recommend that it be used with the ID Number for the most
accurate information.

Strong, Simple, Silent... Still

The Silver Sabre series has had a very long history with Tesoro
Electronics. It was first introduced in 1983. In a time when "lunch
box" detectors were the norm, the original Silver Sabre was
perceived as a toy unit. There have been many men who bought one
for the wife and wound up using it because it worked as well as any
other detector on the market. Advertised as "strong, simple, silent",
the Silver Sabre has gone through many changes over the years. The
Silver Sabre Plus added a no motion all metal circuit. The Silver
Sabre II added a new plastic housing and new Hybrid Circuit
technology. Several years ago we introduced the Silver Sabre µMax
with an incredibly small housing and Max Boost technology. A
number of men bought one for their wife and wound up using it
because it worked as well as any other detector on the market.
(Sounds familiar doesn't it?)

We have decided to bring the Silver back full circle to where it
started. The original Silver Sabre was a turn on and go detector with
Silent Search discrimination and all metal modes. The new Silver
µMax returns to its roots and offers strong, silent and simple
operation once again. The Silver µMax uses a microprocessor to
control the audio tone and battery test. It will come with an 8"
Concentric coil and our latest plastic faceplate. The price of the
Silver µMax will be $299.00.

The Tesoro Compadre was designed with the idea that less is more.
This modest machine can do a lot of the same things that its bigger
brothers can do. It works great for coin hunting, competition
hunting and relic hunting, but it does it without any excess knobs.
Switch on the detector and you're working in a silent search,
motion all metal mode. The farther you turn the knob, the more
discrimination you can bring to bear on those trashy sites. The
Compadre now comes standard with a 5.75" round concentric coil.
The depth is equivalent to the original 7" concentric, plus the new
coil reduces the likelihood of target masking in extremely trashy
ground. It also gives you the ability to get into and around natural
obstacles like bushes, fences, and playground equipment.

The Compadre has it all. One knob simplicity for the beginner and
high gain circuitry and the famous Tesoro ED-180 discrimination
for the advanced user. If one detector can do all of this, maybe less
is more.

The Tiger Shark uses microprocessor technology to create a true
dual function machine. In Normal Mode, the Tiger Shark works like
any other Tesoro detector. It uses the same great ground balance
and discrimination features that made the Bandido series so
successful. On land, the Tiger Shark can be used for coin and relic
hunting and even gold prospecting. By using the four controls on
the outside, you can fine tune your detector to handle whatever
conditions you are working in.

Working in the wet salt areas is where the Tiger Shark outshines the
land detectors. In land conditions, the most crucial adjustment is
using the ground balance to tune out mineralization. In wet salt
conditions, changes in the conductivity in the sand cause most of
the problems. The Tiger Shark uses a completely different set of
internal settings in the SALT Mode than in the NORM Mode. There
are no special controls or techniques to remember.

The Tiger Shark continues in the tradition of other great Tesoro
underwater machines by having interchangeable coils available.
Along with the 8" coil that comes standard with the detector, we
also manufacture a 7" and a 10 1/2" coil.

Our new Sand Shark combines time-proven PI circuits with the
latest digital technology creating the first microprocessor controlled
PI detector for the new Millennium.

Pulse Induction (PI) detectors have always been the natural choice
for working wet salt beaches. Their circuitry and single loop coils
will not see changes in salt-water conductivity that drive a VLF-style
detector crazy. Add Tesoro Electronics' exclusive interchangeable
Printed Spiral coils (available in four sizes) and you create a
fantastic PI detector. But we didn't stop there.

The Sand Shark has two distinct operating modes: VCO and
Normal. When working in the VCO mode, as targets get closer to the
coil, the threshold generates a louder, higher pitched tone great for
pinpointing. The Normal mode works with a single tone and is used
for beachcombing and other prolonged searches.

We've added a microprocessor to help you customize the detector to
your specific needs. Our Pulse Width control allows you to tune
your detector to the best balance of depth, sensitivity, and battery
life. You can also change the Normal mode audio frequency. Simply
use the "F" Adjust knob to set the tone and you're ready to go. The
Sand Shark also has a new drop-in battery compartment for quick
and easy changes.
The Tesoro Sand Shark will change the way that you think about
pulse detectors.
